Functional Medicine in Calgary & Cochrane, Alberta
At Flourish Clinic, we don’t believe in treating symptoms. Your body functions as a whole and we believe it should be treated as such.
We are one of Southern Alberta’s only Functional Medicine clinics. Functional Medicine takes a 30,000-foot view of your health, looking to see how all of your symptoms and illnesses are connected. It is guided by the principle that in order to heal one part of the body, all other parts must also be considered. The body is an interconnected whole that interacts with its environment.
Functional Medicine looks at underlying conditions in order to understand the root cause of disease. This way, each patient can receive specialized and individualized care. Functional Medicine is a new model of diagnosis and treatment. It’s a combination of the best elements of both conventional and alternative medicine.
We strongly believe Functional Medicine represents the future of medicine.
At Flourish Clinic we are fortunate to have two Functional Medicine practitioners. Mark Volmer, R.AC and Dr. Henstock-Zapf, MD have different backgrounds, but both of their paths have led them to the decision that Functional Medicine offers their patients the best opportunity to recover their health.
Welcome to Flourish Clinic. We are the Calgary and Cochrane Functional Medicine experts.
What is functional medicine?
Functional Medicine is:
- Investigative. Focuses on the underlying cause of the problem rather than the symptoms, which leads to longer lasting results.
- Holistic. Recognizes that the body’s health and illness is connected to its environment
- Safe. Treatments have mild or no side effects, and other unrelated complaints often improve on their own
- Patient-centered. Treats the patient, not the disease. Every patient experiences disease differently and treatments reflect this.
- Participatory. The patient is respected, empowered, educated and encouraged to play an active role in their healing process
- Integrative. Combines the best of both modern and traditional medicines and emphasizes the importance of diet and lifestyle
- Restorative. Tests and treatments are designed to prevent and reverse disease and improve quality of life
- Preventative. Guided by the ancient Chinese saying, “The superb physician treats disease before it occurs.”
- Evidence-based. Based on the latest research from peer-reviewed medical journals, and not influenced by corporate and political interests
Over 5 years ago I was in a bad car accident with my sisters. I ended up with a number of injuries from it. Some were broken bones, that healed with time and physio. And one of my main injuries that lingered was shoulder pain. I went 3 years post accident trying different things like massage, physio, IMS, etc. to help manage the pain, but, it only seemed to get worse.
I am a dental assistant and I work part time and it was getting to the point I was worried I would have to quit my job. I was having pain in the left shoulder and numbing and tingling in my fingers that seemed to be getting worse.
My niece went to Mark and raved about him. I thought, well worth a try, not expecting much. I went for 1 treatment with Mark and I remember walking down to my car after and sitting down. And I had NO pain!! I had to go for a few more treatments after that, But it has now been almost a year since my last one and I am still good. I am still totally amazed how much it has helped me and I recommend to everyone Mark, he changed my life!!!
What conditions do we treat?
In conventional medicine, there’s a doctor for every part of your body: cardiologists for the heart, gastroenterologists for the digestive system, neurologists for the brain and nervous system, podiatrists for your feet, and ophthalmologists for your eyes. But in Functional Medicine, we see the body as an interconnected whole within a larger environment. We recognize that in order to treat one part of the body, all of the other parts must also be considered.
In working with you as a patient, we take a step back and try to see common features that might link all the health conditions that you are experiencing. By looking for the common factors and patterns, we can offer treatments that affect multiple symptoms, helping you recover your health faster and more completely.
As Functional Medicine practitioners, we are able to treat a wide variety of health problems, including (but not limited to):
|Acne||Environmental and food allergies|
|Anxiety||Female disorders (PMS, Menopause, Infertility, PCOS)|
|Biotoxin illness/Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS||Interstitial cystitis|

How do you work with patients?
I had seen numerous doctors, chiropractors, specialists, naturopaths, massage therapists, acupuncturists, reflexologists, physiotherapists, mental health therapists and everything in between. They all helped to some degree treating symptoms rather than addressing or investigating the root cause. I never could fully recover.
Now in my early 40s and never completely satisfied, I started frantically searching the web for clinics that were within a reasonable travelling distance, that treated without the use of pharmaceutics and that specialized in adrenal fatigue. I scoured several sites but there is only one that stood out for me and that is Flourish Clinic. Mark and Ali’s bios intrigued me. The reasons they chose the professions they have alone were enough for me to take a chance and go to yet another appointment. I have never looked back.
Within 3 visits with Mark we went through a detailed look at my past medical history, my current lifestyle, hormone lab testing, diet changes and set some attainable health goals and I couldn’t be happier with the progress. I already have gained more energy and can go an entire day without having a nap. That is huge! I have the stamina to keep up with my kids and my mood has improved immensely.
From the moment you walk thru the door you feel welcomed, like old friends picking up right where you left off. You never feel rushed and you continue to be fully supported outside of regular office hours. The lines of communication remain open to allow for any addition concerns or questions. This is worth its weight in gold.
They continue to share their knowledge through a blog and send out regular emails with encouraging and thought provoking information. I love it all. They have thought of absolutely everything to help guide you back to health.
I would recommend this clinic to all my family and friends!
